School Counselor Leadership

The reading advanced my understanding of the nature of school counselor leadership in schools by informing me that the expectation of a school counselor has increased. Therefore, the leadership role must evolve as well. School counselors are leaders, advocate, educators and mediators, but they must stay firmly grounded in core counseling skills (Dixon, et. al, 2010). The reading discussed that SCITs should take on leadership responsibilities resulting in contribution to solution to current national and state level education issues. I agree with this perspective because SCITs will become more comfortable advocating for their future student’s academic needs. As a SCIT, finding a leadership voice in a school that you are interning at can be intimidating.
