I found this project to be tremendously educational as a school counselor in training. I was able to find answers to the questions that I have wanted to know ever since I decided to pursue this line of work and complete this project feeling more confident than when I began it.
One topic that the City High counselor and I talked about that was directly relatable to me was the fact that he received his Master’s degree in School Counseling at Arizona State and was easily able to transfer his license to Illinois. This is important to me because I do plan to eventually settle down in the Chicagoland area near where I grew up. However, when I was applying to graduate school I was outright told by some Illinois Board of Education employees to not pursue a degree in school counseling outside of the state if I wish to come back. Ever since I was in high school I wanted to be a football and wrestling coach. In the community of my high school, sports like wrestling and football were absolutely critical in my growth as a person and keeping my friends in I away from drugs and street gangs. For this reasons I have always wanted to pursue coaching for the sports that I was an athlete of so I can be impactful as a coach as well as a counselor. However, I was told by many different teachers during my time as a substitute that being a coach was likely out of the questions due to the added responsibilities that counselors have compared to school teachers.
