I enjoyed reading your informative post. I agree with your position that there are many key competencies that are essential for school counselors to possess. The key competencies that you suggested as crucial are the overall competencies as described by the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) school counselor competencies (ASCA, 2012). These competencies are what a comprehensive school counseling program is made of. If a counselor lacks these competencies they will not be able to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program as outlined by the ASCA model (ASCA, 2012). Utilizing the ASCA school counselor competencies checklist is one way a counselor could become more self-aware of areas that are in need of improvement.
