What assistance do you offer to new teachers to help them be successful?
They receive a mentor for the building, then a member of their department becomes their mentor (teacher leader of the department) to ensure they adjust to the department's goals, rigor, and personalities.
The building mentor is a veteran teacher that mentors all beginning and new teachers to the building. They will conduct monthly meetings with the teachers to explain school procedures and traditions for upcoming events. Building mentors also ensure that each new teacher understands the daily tasks needed for daily success such as working the copier, signing in in the morning, or getting a sub. This person will also make sure that all new teachers have someone to eat lunch with, sit with at school games or plays, and are comfortable at school social events. Mrs. Worley, the principal, and Mrs. Rogers, the curriculum coordinator, check on the new teachers throughout the year to ensure they are adjusting and have everything they need. They are also observed/pop-ins more often during trimester one to give the teachers feedback as to what the school expects. Content specific teachers are also able to go into new teachers rooms to add feedback as well. The school provides a sub for a period so these observations can take place. New teachers will go to professional development when an area of need is found. An example from this year would be two teachers going to an ESL training after receiving classes of heavy ESL
