School Board Meeting Experience

On Thursday, December 14th I attended a school board meeting in Pleasant Hill for the Southeast Polk schools. There were many people at the meeting, both on the council, from the public, and others. I also learned that the Southeast Polk high school student-council president, Claire Ward, has to attend all of the school board meetings.

The meeting began with the “head” person checking attendance. He stated all of the members names and their positions on the council. All of the members had their agendas in front of them and most of them were taking notes as the meeting began. They began discussing small things, such as approval for the 2018-2019 meetings and calendars. They also approved the “dropout prevention budget and procedure” for the upcoming school year. The same “head” person who took attendance, also went around the council checking for approval from the rest of the board. As he said their name, they would respond with either “I” or “yes”. I do not recall anybody disagreeing with the discussions, but one member said “abstaining” regarding the calendar. At the end of their approvals, they took the time to give the public an opportunity for questions, verbal observations, or comments. The public had none.

High to demonstrate and present their outstanding projects from the 2017 Science Fair. They all were superb. I learned about how pollution affects fish and other marine animals, how efficient or not efficient secondary energy sources are, and what effects music makes on the growth of plants. Following their presentations, their teachers introduced themselves, what they teach, and talked about the project

The meeting would consist of less than half of the thirteen active members. The members saw their role as overseeing the community center’s wellbeing along with setting new policies failing to review their mission over time. When Leslie addressed the board to extend their meeting time for planning, members only wanted to extend their meeting by a hour rather than a day event to discuss different planning strategies. The board failed to work as a group with all thirteen…

Some of the skills that also contributed to the effectiveness of the group were Mayor Echterling’s focusing skills, which he used during the drug enforcement and road repair discussions to keep members from spending to much time on a subject or deviating too much from the conversation (Toseland and Rivas 2017). Eventually this skill was used to postpone the road discussion so that the meeting time could be used more effectively. Other skills used were also related to making an effective use of time and included clarifying content so that members could have productive conversations and making group processes explicit so that members knew how to interact within the parliamentary task group method. Both these skills and the bond of service that…

I would like to start by saying that it was very easy to attend this meeting. The Nevada Legislature Building did not have a lot of security, and people could go in and out of the meeting whenever they felt like it. During this meeting, a District judge presented his proposal on a project that he was developing, called “Project One.” In his presentation, the judge wanted to convince legislators about the importance of condensing court appearances for families. This would allow families who have multiple cases pending in court to have a specific day to attend all meetings at once.…

Since I wasn't able to visit my eighth graders on our usual schedule (my teaching class had an in-class day to reconnect with each other and learn information for our teaching exam- sad face.) , I felt very happy to go visit my kids today! As I entered Ms. Fentress' room when her AI students were exiting, I realized that these kids are just like high school kids. One boy was jamming out to his music, and even rapped for his classmates. It's always funny to see how their distinct personalities intertwine with one-another to make it a friendly atmosphere.…

It was back and forth for a while. My guidance counselor would call me down to his office to discuss the idea that my high school was going to cut the AP chemistry class for the following year and I had to pick a new science class for my junior year. When I asked why he told me that there were only eleven people signed up for the class and that they wanted fifteen to keep it open. To be fair it was understandable that most people would not want to sign up. Many found honors chemistry to be incredibly difficult and would be happy to be rid of it once they finished their final in June.…

Although this specific town council meeting only pertained to one major issue, it showed me the process it takes to allow for a major project like this to take place in a certain area. Before attending this meeting, I had very little knowledge at all about any a town council meeting, how they were ran, or what was even discussed throughout the meetings. It was an eye-opening experience that gave me encouragement to want to start going to my own town council meetings and the town meetings for my high school as well. A town council meeting in a small town like Monroe, Connecticut can be very different than a bigger city like Providence or New Haven, but it still showed me insight on how the Legislative branch of our federal government…
