Scholastic Scrimmage is a supportive community of scholars who always look forward to challenging themselves every week at practices and at competitions. My love of Scholastic Scrimmage comes not only from the competitive fun but also from this group of intellectuals who want to continuously find the limits of their knowledge and break those limits. The only problem was that these scholars did not feel bound together as a unit/club and the chemistry between us was low.
I became captain of the varsity team in my junior year and have since worked to increase this collaborativeness by establishing that players would be on the same teams in practices and competitions to grow as units instead of free radicals with no direction. This creates

Throughout my high school sports career I was apart of many teams, including taking part in football and baseball. Cohesiveness played a big part success as a team. When other teammates choose not to show up to practice, this influenced our team in a negative way. Poor productivity at practice became evident when it came time for our games. However, good practices and hard work brought a high level of cohesiveness.…

In this story, I was at my best when I was working with others towards a common goal. Last January, my Boy Scout Troop partook in the Hopewell Klondike Derby. Our troop constructed a sled for the competition and prepared everything we needed in a long black box. In this derby each team is challenged to pull their sled along a course to several stations in which our boy scout skills are tested. Our team did fairly well at quite a lot of the stations, while we struggled on others.…

There are 10 different stages in the Knapp’s Stages of Relational Development, in which all of the stages apply to my relationship with my teammates from my hometown girls’ soccer team.…

Colonel Stas Preczewski, also known as Coach P, was the coach of the Army crew team for the United States Military Academy in May 2002. He mentored two teams, Varsity and Junior Varsity with the best eight rowers in Varsity team. However, the JV team started to continuously defeat the Varsity team though Varsity had the best individual rowers. In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…

Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…
