Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

I strive to continuously hold myself to high standards and demand the best of myself and others. This is the greatest and most necessary quality of a leader. However, this trait is most effective only when supplemented by others. As a three-sport varsity athlete, I know that the success of a team is determined by the desire of each individual to sacrifice for others and tenaciously pursue greatness. Therefore, by attending the Naval Academy, I will be able to once again surround myself with others of the same mindset, vision and drive to improve and achieve leadership roles.…

I hear a buzz… It is just distant at first, but slowly it seems to be coming closer and closer. I open an eye simply to realize it is my clock alarm. My brain realizes that being 5 a.m. I must get up, but my body defies me; it does not want to move. Then, a vision crosses my mind; I see myself walking down an airplane runway; there is a plane parked in the distance, and the wind is gushing at me.…

Describe your educational and career goals and explain what or who has inspired or helped shape these goals. During my high school years, I recall working in the fields during vacation breaks with my mother harvesting tomatoes, picking up cherries, and pruning grape vines. Fascinating as it sounds, I was always intrigued to understand why fruits and vegetables spoil or often cause food poising in humans. Although, when I questioned my mother why these fruits spoil, she responded it was due to "little bugs," which was not a sufficient response.…

My understanding and perception of personal responsibility involves being accountable for my actions and being responsible for everything I do and say at all times. According to Haskins (2009), “when applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and to learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity.” Having spent 20 years in the United States Air Force, I have learned that being personally responsible not only has an impact on my life, but also others’ lives as well. This also involves the ability of a person to respond to the various challenges and circumstances of life while acting in a mature manner. If required to work as a team to complete an assignment, I will ensure that I will not be the reason it fails or is subpar; I will do everything in my power to make it successful and will assist my teammates when needed.…
