My first semester, I had a wide array of classes that eased me into the college life. The best part of my initial college experience, was my participation in multiple organizations. At the start of the spring semester, my father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. His diagnosis affected me more than I was willing to accept at the time. I was working full-time, going to school, and I was a volunteer research assistant at York College, but I was the only one able to care for him. My mother worked all day and night, and my sister lived in a different state. My academic plans at the time were geared towards a career in medicine. I was persistent in taking science courses, but was not giving myself the time to learn the material. During the next three years, my father’s health became my priority and I was academically dismissed from my first college. It was a hard to accept my failure at that point in my academic career. Simultaneously, I acquired a job with CityMD Urgent Care. This was a big stepping stone in my work experience. In the next couple of years, with dedication and a superior level of professionalism, I worked my way up in the company. My father’s health began to stabilize and arrangements were made for the continuation of his care.
