Scholarly Writing Skills In Nursing

Improved Essays
Entering graduate school, I have personally had mixed thoughts on taking a writing course for my first semester. The increased demand for scholarly writing skills in the healthcare profession allows for improvement in many nursing positions. “Some individuals take to writing easily and with enjoyment”, but “for others the process is quite difficult” (Dexter, 2000). I am one to admit, for me, writing is not effortless. I feel that I have room for advancement, not only with APA formatting, but with writing skills, as a whole.

My personal goal for PC700 is to improve the use of American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. Ii would be very pleasing to apply these skills in my current nursing position and throughout my coursework

Having the classroom in my hand while I am on the go will make this action beyond achievable. I would like to become ahead on class assignments to help with stress, anxiety and having a better mind set on assignments. Therefore, allowing more time to draft and review items before they are due. Furthermore, this will improve my overall learning during this course. Labeling my copy of The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association with color coded tabs will help me stay organized with writing assignments. In addition to being organized it will aid with finding important information promptly. Another task I will perform during this course to improve my APA writing skills is to review constructive criticism given from my professor and colleagues on my writing assignments. Having another individual looking at my work will assist in knowing what skills I need to focus on.

After attending class orientation, I am more confident with starting my course work in PC700. I feel I can use this class as a starting point to getting back into the routine of being in school. I know I will be able to use skills obtained in this class as a student and in my profession. I do not only want to succeed in this program at Frontier, I want to

The Process of Effective Writing Green (2011) states that APA and good writing is a long term process (p.69). The writing process has always been difficult for me. My writing has improved with the help of my instructors, online resources, and the college writing center. In order to write effectively at the graduate level, I will need to refer to the various writing resources that are made available. According to Green (2011)... graduate assignments need to reflect the appropriate level of critical thinking relative to the degree.…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

    Limb Fuse Errors In APA

At the beginning of the course I thought I was an “okay” writer. A lot of times I didn’t realize the mistakes that I was making even after reviewing my writings myself because I would correct these small detail in my head as I read loud. What I noticed that I did a lot in my writings before was use “you” a lot, frequent verb tense errors, and I also had to get use to using the Purdue OWL APA format. Over the past weeks my writings have gotten better from very minimal verb tense errors if any and I think that I have the hang of the APA format. To continue strengthening my writing I will make use of the thesaurus more often to minimize “clutch” words or repetition and increase my vocabulary.…

APA style of writing has been a huge part of my college career. Although this particular writing technique can be challenging at times, I believe my APA writing skills have become more developed as I have been required to utilize them more in each class. APA adds consistency and clarity in any writing by taking the emphasis off of how information is presented and focuses on the information itself. In the beginning, when I was learning the ins and outs APA, I was thoroughly confused in every way.…

    Scholarly Writing Style

Over 15 years ago, Robert Nash (2011) developed a new academic writing style called Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN). For the first time in academics the unacceptable use of the ‘subjective I [me]’was acceptable in scholarly writing. Before SPN only the ‘objective they [we]’ was appropriate for research because scholars believed that only experts could support an agreeable or disagreeable topic. Nash (2011) wanted SPN to become, “a respectable research genre in higher education, particularly in the professional schools” (p. 4), so he wrote his first book, Liberating Scholarly Writing: The Power of Personal Narrative (2004).…

According to Gimenez (2012), academic writing based in “criticality, evidence, and impersonality” is necessary for effective university writing in the nursing field and also for nurse’s professional writing. I do agree with this understanding of academic writing in the nursing field, and I believe that evidence-based, objective writing based in critical analysis (Gimenez, 2012) is essential for effectively presenting nursing documentation in a professional context as well as in a university…

This course has helped me figure a lot of my strengths as a writer. I learned that I have good ideas and can be a good writer when a topic interest me. I have also learned that my grades usually reflect on how well I followed the criteria of an assignment. I realize that I have unique points of views on certain topics and often like to give my own thoughts and explanations about a topic. I also know how to be straight to the point with whatever message I try to convey.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

I have contacted the Ashford writing center several times throughout my years at Ashford and to think I would actually get it right for a change, but I still have a constant struggle with my formatting. I was always told that an essay is developed around a thesis statement and resources that support my opinions about a prompt. I realized that there was more to an essay when I came across scholarly writing, which is writing on a higher level, usually one which we come across during college. It meets high standards of communication with outlines, tone, deductive reasoning, format, and way of analytical approach. It has a consistent way of delivering thoughts, shaping arguments, and narrowing down the subject to explain the main idea. With scholarly writing, students must express their thoughts through thesis statements, and develop an argument with their own thinking, not minding to be objective to clear any chance of bias.…

Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well.…

At this spring semester, there is one of the most essential classes that I have taken at ASU which called ENG 194, Academic Writing in English taught by Professor Zhao. As I said, I am taking WAC at the same time, Introduction to Academic Writing, which is also a class about writing. However, compared with WAC, this ENG class concentrates more on practices, experiences gaining knowledge instead of grammar, vocabulary, and other writing techniques. Even though there is exclusively one class on each Wednesday I learned a portion of useful knowledge and skills on pragmatic writing through this semester, such as sending emails, interviewing as well as presentations, job applications and so on.…
