You know someone is following you. You see them in the shadows lurking. They have a ghastly pale skin color and they’re wearing a pea coat and a fedora. You tell others of what you see, they look but nothing is there. You are experiencing hallucinations. This experience happens to people with schizophrenia. Having schizophrenia is a day to day challenge. Having to deal with people who have the disease can be even worse. In the United States, around two point two million people eighteen or older have schizophrenia. Lucky, the disease is slowly started to lower in numbers. Everyone has billions of cells in their brain. These cells give and receive messages to other nerve cells. “Neurotransmitters” are located at the end of these cells and carry messages to one another. But, the messaging of nerve cells in schizophrenic people doesn’t work. Schizophrenia is thought to be many different types of diseases combined into one. It usually affects men and women just the same. But there is a slightly higher rate of males with the disease than women. One point four males are affected for every one female. There are many other factors that contribute to the cause of schizophrenia along with the chemical imbalances in the brain. For instance, if you have immediate family who had or have schizophrenia increases your chances of obtaining the disease by up to 9%. Also, some schizophrenic patients have been said to have tension within their family which may cause relapses. Some drugs are also known to cause relapses also.
