They believed it was an imbalance of morality and that they were possessed by demons or other unworldly creatures. This was the same belief throughout ancient Greece and sorta like Early China, Early China believed that it was an imbalance in Yin and Yang. However, in Early China they believed it was a disease of the brain and mind.These states tried curing it by moral causes and try to balance their peace and morality.
In the Middle Ages till the 1700’s, people thought of this disease as a possessive nature, people referred to these people as witches and held many trials against them. During these trials they made them do impossible tasks or painful rituals to prove they were not a witch. One of the most famous examples of these would be the 1692 Salem, Massachusetts witch trials killing more than 20 people just for being accused of demonic possession. Kraepelin defined many symptoms with today's symptoms of schizophrenia. Eugen Bleuler, another notable physiatrist of his time later voided Kraepelin's theory, he considered it inaccurate and gave his theory another name, Schizophrenia, he also gave inappropriate treatment such as shock therapy. This caused the death of more than 30 people in the first year of treatment. The people that didn't die from this suffered from many side effects like; Seizures, Headaches, sensitivity to light and personality
