I would do my best to have Amy focus on the here and now and reflecting as little as possible on her past. Because Amy seems to be “irritated” and “argumentative”, I would ease my way into a conversation that would allow me, the counselor, to have her express what she is feeling in that moment and establish some type of rapport. I realize that this is a disorder stemming from psychological and emotional problems and I would do my best to give Amy that useful and systematic dialogue that often occurs between a therapist and client. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: I feel like Amy needs to stop stressing and relax. Therefore, I would like to have Amy come in every session and complete the progressive muscle relaxation activity. Amy would be able to listen to soothing music and relax every bone, muscle, and tendon in her body to the point where she is limp. This will give her the opportunity to just relax and see how it feels to not be so anxious, angry, argumentative, etc.
4. Group Work: In the case study grief and loss was referred to quite a bit. I believe it is important to discuss grief and loss in a group because an individual would be able to sympathize with others and share your experiences. I would have Amy attend groups for grieving girlfriends and wives and allow Amy to see that her feelings are relatable and that it is somewhat normal to have these feelings.
