Overview of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is one of the challenging mental disorders that affect the way individuals think clearly, distinguish between real and unreal, manage emotions, relate to people, and function normally. Although this does not mean that a patient suffering from Schizophrenia may not live usual life. Many of Schizophrenia patients find themselves in lifelong problems due to ignorance (Kisch, 2008). Scientific studies show that although most cases of Schizophrenia are caused by genes that are transferred from one generation to another, more than 60% of the individuals with Schizophrenia condition have no family members or close relatives suffering from Schizophrenia. However, in women schizophrenia symptoms start in the late 20s (Kisch, 2008). Study indicates that it mostly uncommon for children to be diagnosed with this condition and it is also rare for those older than 45. As noted above, schizophrenia comprises of a wide range of life problems especially in cognitive thinking, emotions and behavior. Further, symptoms and signs of schizophrenia may vary, but they all show one characteristic of impaired ability of functioning. Although there is clear role that dopamine theory plays in schizophrenia, these scientists have examined the role played by other neurotransmitters. Evidently, newer treatments are helping in blocking dopamine receptors as well as several serotonin receptors, including 5HT2 which the most studied. Others include GABA neurons which are also regulated by dopamine.
Treatment of Schizophrenia
In schizophrenia treatment, medications are the cornerstone (Fuller et al., 2015). The most common type of medications is antipsychotic medications, which help in controlling symptoms through affecting brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. In cased someone is resistant in taking medication, injections are prescribed instead of pills. In situation where victims are agitated, benzodiazepine such as Ativan is used to calm them down in combination, which can be companied with an antipsychotic.
