“You are special. You are especially bad. Now walk. Cries and whispers,” these are some of the comments and thoughts of Elyn Saks, a law professor at the University of Southern California, who suffers from Schizophrenia. As per National Institute of Mental Health, Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disorder that has affected people throughout history. Even though, Schizophrenia is rarely seen, it occurs in 1 percent of the general population and 10 percent of people who have a first-degree relative with the disorder, such as a parent, brother, or sister (Schizophrenia Online). Schizophrenia is a desolating brain disorder with many life-time side effects, but with proper treatments, cautions, family supports and medications, patients can effectively reduce the symptoms and can survive through disease. In this essay I will further describe some cause, effects, treatments and outcomes of Schizophrenia. The real cause of schizophrenia is still unclear. “Currently, most people in the mental health field think that schizophrenia may be caused by a combination of factors” like genes and environment, different brain chemistry and structure (Friedman, 2000, p.27). Genes plays an important role for inheriting from parents as well as developing schizophrenia, Therefore, scientists believe several genes are associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia.
