The film Schindler’s list is set during WWII, and focuses on the horrible atrocities that happened to the Jews. I found it remarkable that the film was not portrayed from neither a German Nazi view, nor Jewish view. Schindler’s list shows the viewer the horror of the war and the suffering of those involved. The movie is based on Oskar Schindler’s role in saving 1.200 Jews during the war.
At the start of the movie, Schindler was a member of the Nazi party and was only in Germany for one thing, money. He enjoyed partying and spending time with women. I didn’t see him necessarily as an evil man; however, I do see his maturity and mind grow throughout the movie. Oskar hired Itzhak Stern as his Jewish accountant. The main theme explored was good versus evil. Once I realized how Amon was Oskar’s evil brother is about the time I think Oskar realizes this and has an epiphany. Oskar realizes this and starts really trying to save more and more. I felt Oskar’s good nature from the beginning; he just needed to find himself. If Amon wasn’t there to show his true evil side, would Oskar have really seen the full ramifications? I don’t know, but this relationship was pivotal for Oskar. By the end of the movie Oskar fully realized the implications of not just his behavior, but of the Nazi party themselves.
Hate is another main theme shown throughout Schindler’s List. The Nazi’s came up with many excuses on why they did what they did to the Jew’s, but it simply came down to hatred. Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, he wrote that “the personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew.” He thought Jews were a virus that threatened to poison the rest of the world.
