Renée Schaffer-Horton is the internship coordinator for the School of Journalism, and was also the one who worked on two speakers, one from Sinclair Broadcasting Group, and the other from the Wall Street Journal, to come and speak to Journalism students about internships and the importance of journalism in life. Kevin Olivas is the News Recruitment Manager for Sinclair Broadcast Group, who had spoken to a few students at the University of Arizona regarding internships before an hour and fifteen-minute interview was conducted in the Marshall building’s Reading room on University of Arizona’s campus. Schaffer-Horton and the audience. After everyone who wanted a bite to eat grabbed their plates and slices of pizza, everyone quietly circled around the two speakers. LaRoche began, with her educational history to her present job. LaRoche explained she Attended the University of New Hampshire for Journalism, has an active past in journalism, and now runs the intern program for the Dow Jones Newswires. She stated a point she mentioned before, “School media matters a lot.” You should first work on the stories on campus, and try adding an internship to the mix. If one cannot handle an internship with the existing load, try to work more on campus stories; try to find time to fit in an internship, one could take less credits the following semester if they really want to find an internship.
The following question asked was focused on how to deal with gatekeepers. Olivas responded, “Develop the fine art for developing sources. Go around the gatekeeper to the information. LaRoche added, “You report the living heck out of the story.” If the individual does not want to work with you. Let the individual know you are going ahead with the story, even if they do not want to add in the information, but you are going to run (in your story) they, the gatekeeper, was not willing to work with
