We enjoy the sweet fragrance of scented candles and place them everywhere or each part of the house. It lights up your mood and have a beautiful smell, but that smell could also be deadly. Scented candles are made up of paraffin, a waxy solid used for petroleum to produce diesel oil. When they burn, paraffin release carcinogenic toxins, substances that causes cancer, into the atmosphere. Different carcinogenic toxins are benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, and many other chemical gases. These deadly chemicals are produced in your own home, causing indoor air pollution. When paraffin burns a certain way, it produces candle soot, a black substance produced by incomplete burning of hydrocarbons. They stick on your wall, television screens, furniture, drapes, and your carpet. Scented candles causes indoor pollution greatly, but it also affects the environment as well. Since paraffin is a non-renewable source, it greatly contributes to pollution due to oil spills and greenhouse gases. Another thing is the wick in the candles because they have lead and zinc that also release harmful gases. Despite of the physical damage paraffin cause, it could also affect your health drastically. Benzene is an organic compound that can be contacted through breathing. It goes through your lungs and is temporarily stored in your bone marrow or fat. It converts to metabolites in the liver, but is usually removed through urine around 48 hours. The difference between those two candles are unscented doesn’t have paraffin because it’s can be made out of beeswax, soy, or hemp oil wax. It last 30% longer than paraffin candle wax, unless if they are not natural. However, if paraffin is used for petroleum, can unscented candles produce less toxin gas to produce diesel
