The Hobbit Scene Analysis

In the book this scene takes up 28 lines from page 85 line 28 to page 86 line 17. The scene in the move takes up 1 minute and 40 seconds from 2:31:05 to 2:32:45 in the movie and contains 42 cuts. What the viewer sees at first is a monochrome colored scene in which only the Hobbit is shown in color. The background and moving things are displayed very blurry. Only characters standing still or moving slowly are clearly visible. The take is a long shot from an eye-level perspective which shows Gollum hiding behind a rock. As the viewer can hear footsteps closing, it is clear that Gollum is hiding from those footsteps. Suddenly, after some camera rolls from a close up of his face to a shot showing both Gollum from behind and him, Bilbo Baggins tense facial expression changes to one in disbelief what he just wanted to do while taking his sword back down. The music accompanies this progress as the first theme of the movie that was played in Bags End is being played again. Bilbo Baggins then goes backwards making a sound with his feet, which Gollum can hear. The camera perspective changes to an eye line match close up on Gollum’s face changing from sad to fierce together with him roaring. Bilbo is then shown from a low angle mid-shot perspective, running towards Gollum. The camera then changes the view to an overhead view in which you can see the Hobbit stepping on Gollum and hopping over him. Gollum falls through that action. That leads to the last take of this scene, where you can see the Hobbit running out of the grey cave towards an exit displayed in a long-shot. The exit is lit out in a warm sunlight. At the same time the viewer can hear Gollum roaring and see him turning around
