Scene I
Lee and Alice are in the kitchen talking about their days.

Alice: Hey honey how was your day? Did you remember to pick something up for dinner? Remember you promised it was your turn to shop and cook tonight.

Lee: I completely forgot because you’ll never believe what happened to me today.

Alice: What happened that was so eventful that you forgot to get dinner made and on the table? I mean really Lee every time it’s your turn to make dinner you conveniently have something happen so you don’t have to take responsibility. It’s so frustrating.

Sometimes you may use stage directions between pieces of dialogue to tell character 1 to walk away from character 2.

Lee: Well this time it’s a bit more serious a man came up to me while

What meeting was that? You never told me about any meeting.

Alice: OOHHH you mean Case! You know Case he works with me at KIPP, he’s talking about the parent teacher conference with Carrie’s parents tomorrow.

Lee: Case? I’m not sure why I thought Case was a woman?

Alice: Me either, I mean Casey does sound like a woman’s name. But no honey he’s definitely not a woman.

Lee: Oh okay. Anyways how was your day today? Anything crazy happen?

Alice: Oh no just the usual 4th grade shenanigans. You know how loud and unruly they can be. I caught Jimmy choking John because he said he kicked like a girl. Then Jordon started pushing Brian, she likes him and he could care less. Just the usual stuff. Tell me more about your day?

Lee: Besides Mrs. Smith’s dog biting me it was pretty uneventful. Got to tell you it hurt but nothing serious, no stitches anyway. I hate that dog I think he’s got it in for me.

Alice: (frantically) OH MY GOD ARE YOU OKAY?!

Lee: (Stands up and pulls down pants to show Alice) Well it was a real pain in the butt.

Alice: (Snickering) Wow isn’t that something. (Accusingly) So how’s

Alice: Honey you have to know Casey means nothing to me you are my world. Yeah maybe I get bored and frustrated with our life right now and yeah maybe a little flirtation with Casey was a crazy distraction but you Lee you what’s important to me. Please come back to me.

Lee’s eyes open as he weakly smiles when he sees Alice at his bedside. In a barely audible voice he starts talking to Alice

Lee: Aly you’re here, I thought I’d never see you again. When the police came to pick me up I thought you were leaving me for good and running off with Casey. I wouldn’t blame you after the horrible thing I did.

Alice: Never honey that would never happen. But you did scare me cuz I’ve never seen you so angry and I never imagined you would ever strike me.

Lee: I know, I know it was wrong so wrong in so many ways. It’s just I feel like such a failure. We’re still living with my parents, my job is frustrating me. My imagination got the better of me and I started jumping to conclusions and the thought of you with another man sent me into a tail spin. My mind went crazy and I couldn’t control myself I started lashing out but I never meant to hit

He doesn’t seem to notice me at first, he was looking off to the high school football stadium across the street, probably thinking about clarinets or something. His oddly parted brown hair was covered with an odd, large, red, coned hat that oddly coordinated with his blue cape. He is much taller than I am, making it very difficult to look him in the eye, but I could still tell he was concentrated. I snapped near his face to gain his attention.…

Once across the green bridge that crossed the Piscataqua River to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Lelia wanted to stop for a spell. “Gee, I’m thirsty, are you? Want to take a break, maybe step out of the car and stretch our legs?” The 1946, well-used Woody needed gas, and it was always prudent to check the water in the radiator, so Owen agreed and pulled in at a filling station where he’d also spotted the familiar bulky, red soda cooler with the bright white letters. When Owen jumped out of the Ford, he gave a dime to the attendant and took out two icy-cold Coca Colas; using the opener on the left side of the cooler to open the cokes.…
