When I walk past someone that is physically and mentally different than myself, I assume and judge; but my assumption is not always right because I haven’t been in their shoes to where I can completely fathom their situation. People tend to evaluate others harshly when they don’t know them personally. In “The Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, the husband has a hard time understanding the relationship between the wife and the blind man, Robert. Throughout the story, Carver shows us that assumptions interfere with the overall impression of a person and that audible communication increases understanding by using literary devices and elements of character. Carver gives the husband a straight but, aggravated tone which characterizes him as pessimistic…

Opening the once lonely door, there was a hallway that seemed to have just rejoiced with a once depriven necessity. As striking as the first rose in spring, her silky, soft, shiny hair combined with her enticingly exquisite eyes produced a sublime look; it instantly ejected any pressure in the room. Her presence would’ve even made an angry person hopeful. Withered by time, the plethora of thin liable cracks scattered across the olive-dyed floors and indigo walls with an antique circular pattern ; this house was old enough to live in a pangea . It was a very cold and quiet night wind moving across a ground covered in an icy sheen where even the footpath of a mouse could be heard. As I began to walk back home, I saw a young woman she was as beautiful as a freshly grown rose her face was as light as a shining star in the sky and her long brown hair flowing through the wind freely. “Angela” I cried, hoping that the lady didn’t notice me staring “Excuse me sir are you ok.? “she said anxiously.…

Advanced Placement Literature SAMPLE 2 The sonnet “Acquainted With The Night” by Robert Frost was written in the time closer to our own and through describing a lonely walk at midnight, alludes to the sorrowness and darkness of heart of a man who has suffered significant loss and is trying to reconcile with the tragedy at heart.
