Coming in to taking this VUSM class I thought it would just be another required VUSM that I just wanted to get through and get an easy A. This class not only taught me about people who lived differently than me, but it gave me the chance to put myself into somebody else’s shoes in ways I never would have done without this class. Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. One activity that did not go well in one class is a virtual tour/scavenger hunt of the newly opened African American Museum for grades 3-5. First, we kept getting kicked off the Internet. It was supposed to be a self-guided tour and scavenger hunt, but when the Internet failed, half of the class could not access the required website. Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life.
