Scavenger Hunt Analysis

Decent Essays
I too found the scavenger hunt helpfully to learn how to navigate around. It is definitely different then normal schooling. I also liked how you pointed out the decline of the one size fits all programs. The typical schooling doesn't work for most anymore, and thats why I think University of the People is going to become increasingly popular.

Not only was it challenging, but it also helped in trying to apply the concepts of structure and direction to an issue firsthand. Becoming knowledgeable on the concepts of structure and direction can help in many areas of life, especially when it comes to analyzing and evaluating the ideas of others. Listening to Mark Charles' lecture and applying the ideas of structure and direction to it made me realize the importance of thinking from another point of view before forming…

Coming in to taking this VUSM class I thought it would just be another required VUSM that I just wanted to get through and get an easy A. This class not only taught me about people who lived differently than me, but it gave me the chance to put myself into somebody else’s shoes in ways I never would have done without this class. Other VUSM classes require you to find a place to volunteer at and count a certain amount of hours and those places are nice and you have the possibility to learn a lot about things, but the way Frank Kronke set up this class it made you learn a lot more about yourself as a person than it did anything else. We learned about how we view the world and the power we have to change things that need changing. We learned a…

Core reading programs are a huge part of curriculum in education today and it is vital that educators and administrators evaluate a program before implementing it into their school. In my evaluation between two programs, I chose to look at the Houghton Mifflin Reading program and the Harcourt Trophies Reading program. I decided that I was going to look at second grade for each program. After completing the evaluation guide, I decided to write a few pros and cons of each program.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

One activity that did not go well in one class is a virtual tour/scavenger hunt of the newly opened African American Museum for grades 3-5. First, we kept getting kicked off the Internet. It was supposed to be a self-guided tour and scavenger hunt, but when the Internet failed, half of the class could not access the required website. Then, the activity turned into whole class instruction using the smart board. This really took the fun out of it, and the kids were very disappointed.…

Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. Throughout my time in high school I experienced an ever growing curiosity as I was being exposed to new ideas by both my teachers and my peers, but not being thoroughly taught about these new subjects. Castleton is where I hope to gain the ability to explore these curiosities I’ve acquired more effectively both in and out of the classroom. I was never quite sure what it meant to go to a liberal arts…

Goal I The first goal of the program was to “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate study or careers in which psychological training is relevant”(). Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…

Ever since middle school, my goal had been to discover who I was. Wanting to find my individuality, I browsed every interest area known. I engaged myself in a wide variety of areas searching for the one that I would continue with permanently. There were some that peaked my curiosity, and there were those that I felt indifferent towards.…

When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
