1. The dark weary feel of a cemetery can be matched by nothing. There is nothing more scary and creepier than a

cemetary at night. Thinking of all the bodies and bones buried beneath the layer of dirt beneath your feet. One

evening we were taking my grandmother to my pawpaws grave to replace the old withered flowers that we had

previously put there the month before. For some odd reason, when we began to leave the car wouldn't crank, because the

battery had died. Now we were stuck with no signal and night fall soon to come. I was scared to death and the only

thing running through my 10 year old brain was ghost. The current foggy weather that oddly fell upon us didn't

“Natural” versus “Nature” Does natural still mean the same thing in America today? Caitlin Doughty, author of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, struggles with the idea of what is truly natural in present American society, because the word natural had been tarnished. Doughty takes us through her experiences as a crematory operator at Westwind Cremation & Burial. A topic woven throughout the text is the idea of “natural” versus “nature.” Doughty argues that our culture’s false use of the term natural, a reliance on embalming, and our fear of death has changed our perception of what natural means.…

Boneyard Garden Exploration Cemeteries do not frighten me; they are serene places that are frequently neglected until a new tenant comes to reside. Unlike some individuals I know, I would not mind if I lived next door to one. It is not as if the occupants are going to be climbing up from their plot and banging on my door asking for a cup of tea with a bit of sugar. The notion of my demise does make me uneasy, but no one can elude death.…

I turned the key over and got nothing, not an attempt from the starter, or a light on the dashboard. The battery was dead, very dead. As I took the jumper cables out of my dad’s car and set them on the icy driveway I kept repeating “Positive, to Positive, Negative to Ground” over and over in my head. I put the cables on both cars, started my dad's car and then proceeded to wait for twenty minutes. After what felt like years, I got in my car, put the clutch in, put my foot on the break and turned the key.…

To begin this argument, people who enjoy horror films support that watching horror gives them a chance to learn, to experience situations. In an article “The Lure of Horror” published in November 2011, Dr. Christian Jarrett is the Psychologist’s staff journalist mentioned “Movie monsters provide us with the opportunity to see and learn strategies of coping with real- life monsters should we run into them, despite all probabilities to the contrary“. Dr. Jarret explained that horror scenes give people a chance to face with situations that may happen in real life so that people can handle situations or run away instead of standing and screaming. Similarly, Mathias Clasen says, “ That’s where horror can teach us something truly valuable” (Jarrett…

The first room was illuminated by a foul fluorescent light peeking through the shattered light bulbs. The wind whistled through the holes of the crumbled bookshelves. Book lay there, it was as if they knew they were unwanted and discarded; gathering dust just like the bodies of rats sprawled out on the floor; giving a sickly scent of mildew. Spikes of Fungus pierced the bodies like hot knives did through butter! Looking up I could see a riddle on the wall: "what's ahead of you, but you can't see it?"…

The floor boards shifted underneath me as I stepped on them. The broken chalk boards with the chipped paint didn't make this old abandoned school any less creepier. I should have said “I love you” in that moment. I had the urge to kiss you under the stars, and while it would have been a moral error, as I would have subjected myself to my impulsivity, I would have satisfied an urge I felt the need to act upon ever since I met you. But I had concluded that I was merely infatuated with you, but I wanted to be enamored with you. We never discussed the distinction, but I think I will for my own sake. Should I ever conflate the two, Spring and Summer would feel like an eternity.…
