My mind was running its own thoughts as it planned the day I had ahead of me. I walked into my parents’ room, taking a sip of hot coffee from my mother’s mug. I knew she hated it when she would suck her teeth together and gesture me to get my own. The taste of the coffee would get me up and if I tried to make it like hers, I’d fail. She would always be rushing to get the first things done in my father’s family business, the smell of iron running through her oil stained t-shirts.…

The shards of broken shells crunched under my feet. The cool sting of saltwater nursed the cuts and scrapes on the bottom of my feet. It had been six months since my grandfather died, and since then all I could see was the empty space he left behind. I went on these long walks to try and clear my head, clear my vision, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t wipe away the fog of sadness.…

When Goodbye Begins Maria, In one word comes the spark of a lifetime of lost memories. Alzheimers. I’d always thought no matter what became me in this world, I would depart in full awareness of myself and all things around me, my life would flash in front of my eyes, I would live my final regrets in the presence of my greatest achievements.
