Scarlet Road journeys alongside victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking to provide resources and support for physical, emotional and spiritual freedom. They help build healthy relationships and their goals are defined according to the Bible. The Biblical morals and standards are to be followed as an employee of Scarlet Road as well. According to Susan (2012), “Federal sex trafficking law and state criminal prostitution laws are in conflict over the treatment of prostituted minors. States generally define prostitution without regard to age (p.1783)”. Previously, prostitution was a crime for anyone. 8 States now have safe harbor laws to protect minors from being prosecuted for sex crimes. According to Washington State Legislature (n.d.), “SB 6476 - 2009-10: Revising provisions relating to sex crimes involving minors”. Before this revision, if under the age of 18, youth involved in prostitution was considered a crime and they would be charged and often sent to juvenile detention with a criminal record. Effective in 2010, this newly revised law, if you are under the age of 18, you are no longer the criminal, but the victim. This is a huge step in helping minor victims of sexual exploitation. Instead of being criminalized, getting a criminal record, and often being sent to juvenile detention centers, minors can be put in a diversion program, where they can receive resources to help them get out of the industry, and get the help that they need, as they are truly victims, not criminals.
