Any person or thing you are loyal to will govern your future decisions. In the book The Scarlet Pimpernel, a character named Marguerite struggles with the decision of who or what to give her loyalty to. She has the decision to give her loyalty to either her brother Armand, her husband Percy, the enigmatic hero scarlet pimpernel, or her home country France which is ravaged with injustice. In the beginning of the book a man named Jellyband is shown as a loyal innkeeper who values his customers, he treats them with respect and courtesy, he also protects the safe house and is overall an easy, trusting, jolly person. Even Chauvelin has his sense of loyalty to France which pits him against Percy, the Scarlet Pimpernel. I believe Percy wins because

Chauvelin is loyal to his homeland France, who murdered their fellow countrymen, And Percy is known as the hero saves the aristocrats. but their loyalty is based only on rank, and not to his personality and character. At the end, this superficial loyalty leads to the escape of the prisoners , as Chauvelin's soldiers reluctantly listen to his strict instructions, knowing they're letting the prisoners go free and yet do not tell him. Meanwhile, Percy's followers put themselves in extreme dangers for the sake of the Pimpernel's cause, because they truly believe in their leader and the nobility of his character. When her brothers life is in danger she struggles with being loyal to the S.P. because her brother’s life is in danger. She then betrays the Scarlet Pimpernel’s information and immediately feels guilty and when her and Percy go to her country home outside of London she finally confides in him and though he is cold to her she realizes she is in love with him. Marguerite looks through his study and discovers a ring with the S.P symbol. When she realizes Percy is the Scarlet Pimpernel, she immediately trusts him and is loyal to him from that point on.
