Scarlet Letter Pearl Symbolism

What does it mean to be symbolic or to have symbolism? To have symbolism can mean that one thing in particular stands for something else entirely. You can look around and see symbols everywhere. For example, our American flag is the symbol of our country, and stands for the United States of America, the American idea or dream, and immigrants from all over the world of all ethnicities and cultures coming together as one. That in itself is pretty amazing. But, on the other hand, there are other symbols, like the Nazi sign in World War II, which stood for something evil. We can all agree that the Nazis in World War II were terrible people and did terrible things. It seems only fair for people to be scared or angry at the sight of a Nazi symbol. …show more content…
Pearl is Hester’s daughter and the outcome of her mother’s affair with Dimmesdale. She is almost completely a symbol and hard reality. Though she is well taken care of and is a bright and innocent young girl, the community views her as the result of the devil’s work. She, unfortunately, was born into that status, and more than likely is going to keep that title for the rest of her life. On the other hand, Hester views her as “the living hieroglyphic”. Which just means that she is the living proof of her mother's adulterous actions and the fact of it will never go away. Since her birth, she has been both a blessing and a torture to her mother because she loves her but at the same time it hurts to know what evil act she has committed. Also in the story it is described that Hester would dress Pearl up in red clothing to remind her even more of what she has done. Others can also relate that Pearl’s name is something that provokes thoughts of purity. There are stories out there that describe that a Pearl is so innocent and so pure; which is ironic considering she is the result of an affair. In conclusion, Pearl is a great symbol of very many different

God, as a direct consequence of the sin which man thus punished, had given her a lovely child [. . .]” (81). Pearl provokes Hester to be an outcast and forces her to abandon her community, her reputation, and all other elements of her past life. Although Pearl prevents Hester from the choice of concealing her sin since she was pregnant, Pearl also ignites Hester’s strength. Due to the Puritanical beliefs of the society 1630s, Pearl was destined to be hated before she was even born. The townspeople expect Hester to give birth to an ugly and demonic child because it is the direct product of sin. The fact that Pearl looks completely normal is a very radical idea for the Puritan society, and could be a comment on how ridiculous their beliefs were. The extreme stigma that surrounded any kind of sin at that time guaranteed that Pearl, the product of that sin, would be despised just as Hester was. Pearl is constantly with Hester thus she is subjected to all of the harassment that her mother receives as well as what is directed at her.…

Scarlet Letter Journal Analysis Journal #2: In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the scarlet letter negatively affects Hester because it excludes her from society, labels her as the embodiment of sin in the town, and grants her a lot of disrespect among the people. Hester lived in a cottage that was far away from the whole town and completely surrounded by woods, which already made her feel separate from the community. Not only that, but every time she went to the busy Boston area, her contact with society made her feel “banished, and as much alone as if she inhabited another sphere” (Hawthorne 78). Hester is obviously suffering from isolation already, due to her sin and the scarlet letter setting her apart from everyone…

Her relationship with nature coincides with the relationship she is creating with the Puritan community, and just as the community cannot control nature, wild and free, it will not be able to control Pearl. (Daniels 1) Pearl may remind the Puritan community of their own sins and they become so angry with her because their failure to pacify Pearl allows them to remember their unrevealed sins and secrets and not be able to pacify or leave them in the dark. Pearl in this case embodies a sense of exposure. The exposure of Hester and Dimmesdale’s affair and what may also be the exposure of the Puritan community’s sinful ways. While there are many symbols written into The Scarlet Letter, Pearl has to be the leading symbol.…

As the plot progresses, Hawthorne develops Pearl’s characteristics as though she were an angel sent from heaven. Despite Hester Pryne’s sin and the scarlet letter, the author describes Pearl as wild, but beautiful and imaginative at best. Pearl's character is symbolized by God and the supernatural. Among the community, Pearl is considered a “demon’s child” born out of a guilty passion, but Hawthorne refers to Pearl as a “lovely child […] worthy to have been brought forth in Eden” (Hawthorne 82). He depicts Pearl in this fashion because of her beauty, but this description is ironic considering that she was born out of the affair between Hester and another man.…
