As the plot progresses, Hawthorne develops Pearl’s characteristics as though she were an angel sent from heaven. Despite Hester Pryne’s sin and the scarlet letter, the author describes Pearl as wild, but beautiful and imaginative at best. Pearl's character is symbolized by God and the supernatural. Among the community, Pearl is considered a “demon’s child” born out of a guilty passion, but Hawthorne refers to Pearl as a “lovely child […] worthy to have been brought forth in Eden” (Hawthorne 82). He depicts Pearl in this fashion because of her beauty, but this description is ironic considering that she was born out of the affair between Hester and another man.
