The Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an anti-transcendentalist which is a person who thinks all humans are natural evil and sick. When Hawthorne wrote this story he based it off of a time period that took place in the 1600’s in a puritan society, that later starts to turn to an utopian society later on. In this particular puritan society, they were extremely strict when it came to morals and religion. The main characters were Hester, Dimmesdale, Pearl and, Roger Chillingworth. In the story these characters break one of the puritan rules and commit multiple sins. The main sin that was committed was the sin of “adultery” hence the fact of the time of the book The Scarlet Letter “A”. In his novel …show more content…
evil. Throughout the story Hawthorne constantly mentions this Rosebush to help us to understand that roses represent a type of sweet moral but that the thorns on the rose, help show that not everyone is perfect and that they sin every once, in awhile. Peal is very similar to a rose because she is a sweet, innocent child that was made from a horrible sin. Hawthorne explains, “ We could hardly do otherwise than pluck one of its flowers, and present it to the reader, it may serve, let us hope, to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow.” (Hawthorne 46). This quote shows that the rosebush is a significant representation of good vs. evil throughout the story. As the story goes on, Hester and Pearl have a lot of challenges and obstacles. People are very judgemental and harsh because of their situation. Despite all of that, they stay strong and see the positive side to things, Hawthorne explains, “She had been plucked by her mother off the bush of wild roses that grew by the prison door”.(Hawthorne 102). This quote proves that not only the town’s people and Hester know how significant Pearl is, but that herself deep down knows that she is something special that came from a evil sin. The rosebush is a constant reminder of all the good and sin that is expressed throughout the …show more content…
evil. Pearl born out of sin, is a rambunctious young girl who is wise beyond her years. Hester has to take Pearl everywhere she goes, just like the scarlet letter. Hawthorne explains, “ God, as a direct consequence of the sin which man thus punished, had given her a lonely child, whose place was oh the same dishonored bosom…” (Hawthorne 81). This quote shows that your actions give you an equal reaction. The book goes on to say, that Pearl may be taken away from Hester. Taking Pearl away would be like taking the scarlet letter away. Hester says, “She is my happiness! She is my torture: Nonetheless! Pearl keeps me here in life, Pearl punishes me too! See ye not she is the scarlet letter…” (Hawthorne 105). This quote shows that Hester, a sinner, has all her hope and faith in her child. Pearl keeps Hester alive in the cruel world. Not only does she keep alive but she helps her stay sane and helps her survive all the judgement that she gets. For this reason, Pearl is a symbol of good because she is pure, but she also is a symbol of evil because she was made in the evilness of

The bad, which was Chillingworth in the story was represented with the black flower, and the good, which is Hester and Pearl is portrayed with the wild rose bush. The author described the “... ugly edifice… in the soil that had so early borne the black flower of a civilized society, a prison,” (Hawthorne 35) to convey the characteristics of bad. Black in the context directly relates to the devil's name, because in the Bible black is the darkest color and with sin comes darkness. The term prison is used, people never go to prison for doing good deeds, so therefore the author mentions it to help explain the flowers purpose and symbolic meaning. Along with the black flower there is a rose bush that has some symbolic meaning.…

Scarlet Letter Journal Analysis Journal #2: In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the scarlet letter negatively affects Hester because it excludes her from society, labels her as the embodiment of sin in the town, and grants her a lot of disrespect among the people. Hester lived in a cottage that was far away from the whole town and completely surrounded by woods, which already made her feel separate from the community. Not only that, but every time she went to the busy Boston area, her contact with society made her feel “banished, and as much alone as if she inhabited another sphere” (Hawthorne 78). Hester is obviously suffering from isolation already, due to her sin and the scarlet letter setting her apart from everyone…
