Hawthorne explains, “ We could hardly do otherwise than pluck one of its flowers, and present it to the reader, it may serve, let us hope, to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow.” (Hawthorne 46). This quote shows that the rosebush is a significant representation of good vs. evil throughout the story. As the story goes on, Hester and Pearl have a lot of challenges and obstacles. People are very judgemental and harsh because of their situation. Despite all of that, they stay strong and see the positive side to things, Hawthorne explains, “She had been plucked by her mother off the bush of wild roses that grew by the prison door”.(Hawthorne 102).
