In the beginning of the story, a girl named hEster Prynne, had just got out of jail wearing a scarlet A and holding a baby. The townspeople shame her for her sin of adultery. In the crowd, Hester makes eye contact with a man. This man went on to ask a citizen on why the aldt was standing on the podium. THe citizen explains that Hester is married, but committed adultery and had a baby now, but won't give up the father's name. Later, the same man from the crowd visits her jail posed as a doctor, and we find out that he is Hester's long lost husband. He forgives her for her sins, but makes her vow to keep his identity a secret and to not let anyone know they were married. He also vows to discover the baby's father. Although, once Dimmesdale goes back to the town, he had a sudden urge to do unholy things and he starts to doubt if he made the right decision or not. He then goes on to prepare his speech, while Chillingworth suspects that something is up with him. On election day, Hester receives news that chillingworth also booked a spot on the ship and her hopes deflate. She continues to listen to the sermon even though there is a lot of people looking at her A. At the end of the sermon, Dimmesdale is looking really bad and he starts towards Hester and Pearl. He stands next to them at the scaffold and reveals the letter A on his chest before he dies. Before he died, he tells hester that they probably won’t be together in the afterlife. Chillingworth feels horrible because he plan of revenge had failed and dimmesdale managed to escape his evil plan. In the end, Chillingworth has no other reason to live, so he dies and leaves a fortune to Pearl. Hester and Pearl use this to leave the colony, but Hester comes back some years later and lives in the cottage. The people in the town no longer shame Hester, but instead, they seek her out for advice, even though she is still wearing her red letter
