1. In the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne the rosebush outside of the prison door might represent beauty or perseverance. It may represent beauty because in the sense of people judging others, the community Hester lives in is not beautiful in any way. Hester’s community is very quick to accuse someone if a “crime”. The people in Hester’s community are considered Puritans. Puritans are considered to be pure and they are said to “contain no evil”. When in reality they are committing crimes because they are torturing people for being “different than they are”. The rosebush could also represent the perseverance that Hester beholds. The A that is sewn into Hester’s clothing is surprising because it is so intricate and detailed. This shows that Hester doesn’t care about what the others think. She knows what she did was wrong, yet she still takes pride in her work as a seamstress. She worked extremely hard to make her A as beautiful as she possibly could. She wanted to show her community that their comments will never phase her and they will never make a negative influence on her. She wants her child to have the best possible future, but this community will never accept her or her child ever again.
