Comparing Characters In The Scarlet Letter And Chicago

L The novel The Scarlet Letter and Chicago were both wonderfully carried out. They had amazing storytelling and great characters.The Characters are probably the most important aspect of these pieces of work. In many parts these characters sins and are alike but also disparate. L The Protagonist of these novels are named Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter and Roxie Hart from Chicago.They both are adulterers who slept with other men for personal gain. Hester had to pay for her infidelity by wearing the Scarlet Letter A for the rest of her life, similarly Roxie had to pay for her infidelity by going to prison. L The protagonist of The Scarlet Letter ,Hester Prynne ,slept with the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, while still married with her husband from England, Roger Chillingworth. Arthur Dimmesdale is an anti-hero because he saves Hester and Pearl with his confession. He did mess with hesters life by branding her as a adulterer and making her live as an outcast ,but because he saved them spiritually he can be considered an anti-hero. l In The Scarlet Letter, Hester, Arthur, And Roger all develop throughout the novel, unlike the characters from Chicago who are all static and don’t progress anywhere throughout the movie. l In the beginning of the story, Hester is strong and prideful while walking to the scaffold.She is wearing the Scarlet Letter A on her bosom. She is described as tall and elegant with luscious hair and perfect body physique. Throughout the story she is seen as independent and is shown that she can care for Pearl alone. She is known as strong for caring for Pearl and the sick. By the end of the story, Hester is defiant towards the way her community treats her. She takes off the Scarlet Letter A and the cap that kept her hair from gleaming. She also decides to leave with Dimmesdale showing that she doesn't care for her community
