The parents of Simon Birch were told he would only live a few hours, a couple of days, maybe a few months, certainly not 12 years! In the movie Simon Birch, Simon was born very small and weak. He proved the doctors and a lot of other people in town wrong. In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, Doodle was also born with a weak heart and was very small. He had been practicing for a long time and had finally learned how to walk. His parents were overjoyed, and they hugged and kissed him over and over. Simon’s parents were not thankful for who Simon was. They thought of him as a burden, and Simon knew it. They were bitter towards him. They stuck up for each other in church and at baseball. All brothers do have arguments. For example, Joe had an outburst and got mad at Simon for killing his mom, but instead of staying mad and ruining their
