How well do you really know the older brother in the story, "Scarlet Ibis"? I think he acts irresponsibly with his younger brother, Doodle. The older brother is supposed to treat him with care but he doesn’t do that. Although the older brother is a child and probably doesn’t know better, he has been told a list of what not to do with his younger, disabled brother. The older brother forced doodle to walk and swim which was painful for doodle. The brother did all of this for his own pride. He was embarrassed to have a crippled brother. The older brother forced doodle to do stuff he didn’t want to do for example, touch a coffin, and many other activities. He forced doodle to walk even though it hurt him. I’m not going to hurt you. I’m going to teach you to walk.” (Hurst 4).This proves the older brother is a bad brother by the way he treats him. Telling doodle to shut up when he was trying to tell you not to hurt him is idiotic. Forcing doodle around to do all of this stuff he doesn’t want to is also idiotic. The older brother always pushed doodle to do more than he should with his condition. “Doodle was both tired and frightened, and when he stepped from the skiff he collapsed onto the mud...” This quote shows that the older brother is pushing doodle to his limits of exhaustion. Doodle ends up falling behind on their way home, and begins to call for his brother to stop and to come back but the older brother didn’t. He ran away faster leaving his brother alone and afraid in the forest. When the older brother had gone back to find him, doodle was found dead. He is a bad older brother by doing this, leaving his brother behind and ignoring his calls. At first, the older brother hated doodle because he wanted a brother that could wrestle with him and climb vines but he couldn’t do this with his disabled brother. He even thought about killing
