The Scarlet Ibis Argumentative Essay

In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst the story suggests that the brother is guilty of Doodles death because he thought Doodle should die, he taught Doodle for his own selfish reasons, and he ignored the doctor’s warnings. For my first reason why I said the brother is guilty is because he thought that Doodle should die. The reason for why I said that is because on page 345 the brother said “I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” Also on page 346 the brother said “Then i’ll leave you here all by yourself.” My second reason for why I say the brother is guilty is because he taught Doodle for his own selfish reasons. On page 346 it says “When Doodle was five years old I was embarrassed

As a consequence to Brother’s selfish act of cruelty, Doodle had to suffer. Through no fault of his own, he collapsed from the over exertion of energy because of Brother’s demands. Even though Doodle was going to die sometime in the near future anyway, he could have experienced school and made new friends who would have treated him right. He could have passed away peacefully, instead of dying in a gory way. Brother had always felt the temptation to bring down Doodle’s self-esteem, and had been a major contributor to Doodle’s…

According to my evidence Brother is guilty. A reason Brother is guilty for the murder of Doodle is that he had been planning to kill him for years before the actual death. Brother admits to this on page 345 quoting, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” This proves to show that murdering Doodle was not a sudden mistaken death. The death of Doodle was intended and the brother had waited years for a proper chance to make the death look natural.…

Imagine having a condition in which you aren’t supposed to exercise frequently, and you are not normal like everyone else. A boy named Doodle from the book, The Scarlet Ibis, was born with that kind of syndrome. He had to face many trials throughout his life, which unfortunately led to his death. In the story, I believe it was the brother’s fault for Doodle’s death because he should’ve been acceptive of his condition, not have pushed him that hard to become normal and waited for him in the storm.…

In my conclusion, I believe that the brother is responsible for Doodle’s death, because he should I have never left Doodle in the first place and that he showed a lot of cruelty instead of compassion to his brother, which I see as he dislikes his brother and that he never wanted him in the first place, because he just wanted a normal…

I think that although the narrator was responsible for Doodle’s death, he should not be fully blamed for it. The events leading up to Doodle’s death—especially the narrator’s impulsive abandon of Doodle—were caused by the narrator’s feelings of shame and resentment, and this makes Doodle’s death his fault. However, his actions were not influenced by his true feelings about his brother; they occurred in a moment of heated emotions and shame that quickly abated. Because a weakness in all humans is not having control over one’s feelings, I don’t think the narrator was fully responsible for his actions at the time. (Had the narrator been intentionally wishing Doodle harm at the time, my feelings about his actions would be different.)…

“He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red” (6). Distinctly, the fact that Doodle had blood coming out of his mouth, out of all places, is no coincidence. Earlier in the story it is mentioned that Doodle has a weak heart. Then, throughout the story, he continously begs for his brother to never leave him. During the end, the narrator does leave Doodle, and, in one sense, breaks his weak heart.…

Furthermore, Doodle had cried the words”Don’t leave me, Brother.” (Page 4) when Brother said he was going to leave Doodle alone in the barn loft. Doodle showed compassion for the Scarlet Ibis that had died in a storm, by burying it. With this in mind, at the end of the story Doodle was left alone by Brother, who had left in anger resulting in Doodle’s death. The story ends in tragedy and doesn’t tell how Doodle has died.…
