Scar Narrative

After I'm done putting on my outfit I give myself a long stare in the mirror admiring my great makeup skills which include and are limited to the lipstick. Putting my hair into a ponytail, I recognize the defining scar under my jaw. My fingers traced the outline of the disfiguration there. Even though the scar is now smaller than before the memories associated with the scar still haunts me to this day. I flinch remembering everything that scar stands for.

Discussion Reply to Our Scars Written by Rianna Crocker Most of my scars have been obtained through playing childhood games, sports, or unexpected awful encounters with vicious animals. How awful it must have been to have a scar on your face, a place that is inescapable from daily view, that reminds you of the death of your beloved friend and the grieving process that resulted in that scar. I too know what it is to lose such a precious friend at such a young age and the pain that grew inside. I must have been the tender age of four when the family cocker spaniel had a litter of puppies; two to be exact.…

Though few immediately truly told their story, the most simplistic one reached toward me begging for my attention: “Scars”. Personally, I am very familiar with the once painful white lines, as three of them mark my face. Once I turned to the waiting chapter, I believed my personal experience enabled me to read as a knowledgable individual regarding the topic. Wrong. Greeted by the devastating…

was injured in November 2007 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I was commanding the vanguard of a combat team leaving a patrol base to conduct a night operation in the Zharay district. Shortly after our departure and ‘shake-out’ into formation, my command vehicle was hit by a Command-Wired IED that defeated the armour and safety systems aboard our Light Armoured Vehicles. The initial blast and subsequent fire that spread to the ammunition and explosives we were carrying generated three Killed-in-Action (KIA) and three Wounded- in-Action (WIA) personnel. All the leadership component within our vehicle was either injured or dead, and the vehicle driver was the only individual able to move us to cover by dragging us behind a concrete block.…

My scar story “Your setbacks are the platforms for your comeback” everyone at some moment in their life has a setback, but it’s the way we go about this setback that defines you as a person. This quote demonstrates the difficulties I had to face and overcome last year in having to sit on the sidelines watching my team and how I used this injury as motivation and a learning experience to help me return to the game of basketball stronger and better than ever, this is my scar story. My story began last year in march it was the very first game of basketball for the season and for me it was just another ordinary routine game of basketball, I taped my ankles like normal, warmed up like normal and played like normal little did I know that this ordinary game or basketball would change my outlook and values in life so dramatically. It was the fourth quarter of the game and my team were down by at least ten points, in desperate need of points I attacked the basket even with multiple defenders in front of me in hope that one of the defenders would foul me.…

With even a passing reading of his poetry, it is quite evident that Michael Ondaatje has a strong fascination with markings and the meanings they entail. From poem to poem, the marks range in how they are presented: sometimes they are sensory and other times they are emotional. In The Time Around Scars, the markings are discussed as if they were physical wounds. Meanwhile, the markings of The Cinnamon Peeler come in the form of scents.…

Scarring is used as a symbol of the intangible and psychologically poignant experiences that characters have in The English Patient, as well as throughout Ondaatje's canon. A symbol is a literary device that is used to represent an abstract idea in a concrete form. This symbolism is evident throughout Ondaatje's body of work, where scars manifest loss in The English Patient, the impact of a strong connection in “The Cinnamon Peeler”, and finally memories hurt and pain in “The Time Around Scars”. The ubiquity of scarring vindicates it as a device that Ondaatje purposely uses, rather than a mere coincidence. The events that cause the physical scars to the literary characters give an impression that will remain for the rest of their lives, similar…
