One of the biggest scandals in sports history was in 2000 when the Paralympic Spanish basketball team competed posing as intellectually deficient players when in fact they were not, to fraud the Paralympics. From up until 1996, athletes who had learning disabilities were not able to participate in the Paralympics. There were campaigns in place that encouraged the committee to include these individuals, and eventually it gained massive recognition and led to the inclusion of these athletes. Four years later, at the Paralympics In Sydney, an undercover journalist was playing on the Spain team and exposed the fact that this team was cheating. Once they arrived in Sydney, Australia, there were no tests to determine their intelligence. They were only checked for their blood pressure and if they could do press ups. Once the game was reported, The Local stated that many who viewed the game commented on the players. There were comments stating that they allegedly knew the players and that some of them were not disabled. This led to Rimbargordam, the undercover journalists story, that exposed the team, the committee and the trainer of this team. The team, the trainer, and the committee leader Vicente were charged with fraud and forgery among other charges. Fernando Martin Vincent took all responsibility for the scandal, and thirteen years later had his court hearing where he was found guilty. Fernado Martin Vincent, who founded the National Association of Special Sports in 1975 (The Local), because he has a disabled child of his own. However, he let go of the thought of letting athletes like his son participate in a fair game that allowed them to demonstrate the talents they had, despite their setbacks, and gave in to a greedy plan to make money on lies and deceit.
