In today’s world, technology is overtaking the world, making our lives easier and less active than before. However, are we still able to find motivation to exercise?
What is exercise, physical activity, and sports?
Physical activity is any movement of the body that causes energy expenditure, i.e. kilocalories. Exercise is a type of physical activity that is mainly for health benefits and physical fitness and it is usually planned, structured, and repetitive. Sports is also a type of physical activity which involved skills to compete against one another.
Why is motivation needed?
Motivation is an important factor for determination, persistence, and maintaining efforts to achieve a goal when doing any activity. Without motivation, all other psychological factors, such as confidence, focus, and emotion are meaningless. There are 2 types of motivation – intrinsic motivation (purely for the own pleasure and satisfaction), and extrinsic motivation (for external rewards, such as praise, and usually not for own sake).

The answer is: yes! Personality is a term used to describe and explain how a person feel, think, and behave. The five factors model is most frequently used to describe a person. Different behaviours are categorised under five factors: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Each factor has different types of personality. For example, individuals who are high in agreeableness are helpful and soft-hearted; individuals who are high in neuroticism are unstable in their emotions. Interestingly, research had shown that athletes have a higher level of extraversion than non-athletes. Individuals who have high level of extraversion are described as friendly, sociable, energetic, and optimistic.
