“Lady Saw”, one of the most well know female artists in dancehall music, was born in 1972 in the small Jamaican village of St. Mary's as Marion Hall. At eight years old she started off singing in the Seventh-Day Adventist church choir. Later, as a teenager, she was able to practice her skills on a local sound system until moving on to Stereo One sound system.[2] She gained the attention of record producers such as Piper and Oliver Shaw. She was able to record her first single for producer Piper. Then Olive Shaw, producer at Capricorn International label, got the song "Love Me or Lef Me", to receive significant airplay. “Lady Saw” then had her first hit with a song titled "If Him Lef" and she topped the Jamaican charts. It can be observed even today as men hold and easily acquire some of the higher positions in the working world. However, it is the total opposite in Lady Saw’s video “I've Got Your Man”. She is able to portray a fashionably well-dressed and successful business woman whose clever lyrics give advice and also warning to women to respect their significant other. Thus, she gives across ideals of women empowerment in both their careers and in relationships. However, there are cases which are rare and few due to the stigma of men who report being abused by women being less of a man. A Home Office paper (2004:34) states that “The British Crime Survey shows that less than one in four women and one in ten men (23% and 8% respectively) of the worst cases of domestic violence were reported to the police, so solely relying on police data means that many cases of domestic violence will not be recorded.” Reporting of domestic abuse in the Caribbean also showed similar figures but also proved unreliable since a this data is collected by the police and is severely underreported; “updated figures of 2013 (UNODC, 2013) also revealed that 12% of men who were killed in Grenada for example, were as a result of domestic or intimate partner violence. The UNODC report also cited men killed in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, a lot through increasing drug related street violence, but 7 % in Jamaica and 4% in Trinidad & Tobago were killed as a result of family violence.”
