It can set the scene and change the mood of a movie. In “Saving Private Ryan” the constant sounds heard throughout the movie include gunshots and bombs. When dialogue is not present during the war scenes the viewer knows what is happening through the visualization of sound. In the opening scene when the camera takes the viewer underwater the screen goes mute. This is down intentionally to make it feel like what it was for the soldier in that situation. The striping of sound adds aniouxness and paranoia. In a scene where Captain Miller is hit with the shock wave from a grenade the sound of a ring is present.
