Every action, that every person takes, has a consequence. Some can have minimal effect of change; some can be life changing. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When life gives you a second chance to save your lifestyle, you seize it to undo the actions done, that has led to its consequences. The main character, Gerard, has been given a second chance to make his future the best it can be, despite the given facts of what has happened in his past.

Laurel is the passionate one, who cares about Gerard’s feelings. Another contrast between them is that Issy is being portrayed as someone who doesn’t need help from anyone else, that she isn’t dependent of anyone. While Laurel is very dependent, she does not want to share anything with anyone if it’s hers, which is a reason as to why she wanted to break it off between her and Gerard. (p4. L130)
These contrasts enhance a theme of this short story, which is having a sudden realization of what mistakes you have done and how to fix them without having to regret the past or into the future. Gerard is given a chance to undo the mistakes and put the past behind him.
To give the title “Save as Many as You Ruin” itself meaning to the short story, is that he saved Lucy, from near enough being an orphan, but ruined his relationship with Laurel. Yet in the end of the story, got reunited with Laurel. When ruining something, try to find something positive to come out of the consequence of ruining something. By ruining the relationship with Laurel, he got Lucy out of it, something Gerard cherishes
