The boys have harassed, pushed around and exploited the one piece of their society they have left throughout the entire duration they have been on the island. When Jack and the rest of the group leave Ralph and Piggy for a more savage state of being, Ralph and Piggy try to get everyone back together and recreate the democracy they once held onto for survival, but Jack’s power had become too much to compete with. He took one of the last pieces of Ralph’s democracy. Jack is now the only major power on the island, “He was a chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggy’s broken glasses” (242). Piggy’s glasses represent the last bit of knowledge the boys have had since before they crashed onto the island. Jack successfully eliminated democracy on the island, and his power grows stronger. There is no one there to intervene and check Jack’s power, so he becomes out of control. He has corrupted all the boys in his tribe and crippled the democratic force of Ralph and Piggy who carry what is left of the island’s knowledge. Ralph and Piggy still have each other to carry on this common knowledge of democracy and anti-savagery. The slow deterioration of knowledge at the beginning of their time on the island quickly starts to accelerate until the last bits are destroyed and savagery prevailed.
