In Chapter five of Lord of the Flies, the author mentions something about mankind’s “essential illness”. I think that what he means by this is that mankind is naturally evil. Since he participated in World War 2, he saw how mankind truly acts. And he saw it as evil, and many others have as well. He puts this in his book to symbolize that eventually, mankind will always revert to its savage, evil state.
