Saunders Medical Center: A Case Study

Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of health care and information technologies in the delivery of nursing care. At Saunders Medical Center, the nurses told me that they must do ongoing technological education, such as e-learning courses to help gain the knowledge of forever changing technology in the medical field. According to Sweeney (2010), all nurses should be aware of new technology in the workplace and they must gain knowledge when designing, implementing, and updating their software, especially for the electronic medical record (EMR). If the system is not updated, then this could cause lag in the system or possibly delayed information to the other interdisciplinary team members (Sweeney, 2010). At my clinical site, the nurses told me they have IT technicians come in and update their systems for them when it requires or needs it. They also provide educational courses on how to chart properly and how to understand any technical information about the technology they use as well. IT is available to them 24/7. Autonomy is always a big ethical principle used in the workplace, the patient is always incorporated in their own care plan and should be able to make their own decisions. I encourage my patients to make decisions for themselves, such as figuring out what their goals are and perceptions of their illness. I remain faithful, trustworthy, and loyal when it comes to building my relationship with my patients. I make sure I follow the medication rights to prevent harm in my patient, non-maleficence.
