On two different occasions in Moses’ day being the first born meant you could be killed. Pharaoh killed the entire Jewish nations first born. Then later, God killed the Egyptian’s first born who did not have the blood over the door. In the New Testament Herod sent out a decree to have all the first born males in the land killed. Here it wasn’t the best thing to be the first born.

In many ways, you are the example used to measure everything or everybody who follows after you. You set the standard. You have nothing to compare to by being the first.
