Sauerkraut-Personal Narrative

The familiar smell of steamed sauerkraut fills the church. I spot my Nana rushing around in her red apron, wearing the biggest smile on her face. I was smart enough to leave my coat in the car to avoid having it smell like the repulsive sauerkraut. How could something taste so good, but smell so bad? I rush to the serving window and greet my brother. He too, is wearing a bright red apron with Calvary Lutheran Church embroidered on it. Grabbing a plate, I place some bread, butter and applesauce onto it. My brother adds a immense scoop of mashed potatoes, and another man adds a heap of sauerkraut and pork mixture. I make sure to get some sauerkraut in the bite, knowing the two flavors complement one another very well. I continue to stuff my face until my plate is clean. The only difference is that there are no presents and a table of food instead.
I make my way to the table and gaze at the options. There are so many to choose from. I see my grandmother's famous homemade peanut butter chocolate cake, and decide on that. As I go back to my seat, I am delighted to see that more family and friends have joined us. Despite my brother working in the kitchen, he still make time to come and converse. My Nana approaches me, giving me a kiss on the cheek.
“How is it?” she asks, eyeing the cake I am consuming. She knows it is one of my

The Gourmet Problem Reading “Today’s Special” by David Sedaris made me realize that I not only agree with his disdain of gourmet food and its seeming takeover of normal restaurants with normal food but also that I am a food snob. First of all, when I order a traditional meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, I expect the meatloaf not to be mixed with prunes and drowning in a peach sauce accompanied by mashed potatoes made with cauliflower –where’s the potatoes?- and vanilla green bean amandine. Then I realized that while others are snobbish about ‘normal, boring food’, I am a reverse food snob. Food does not have to be bland…

Well, I might have spoke too soon because the salmon I got as my meal was very delicious. It was parmesan encrusted salmon, served over mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. I truly do not have a single complaint about my meal. Now, that I probably have your mouth watering, I have to finish up with my personal favorite, my dessert. The famous question was asked “Now did you save room for dessert” and in my family the answer is always “No there is no room, but I will have the..”…

It was just after the Christmas of 2009, when my friend’s father, Jeff, gave my father a call from about 200 miles north. I was excited to go as well, because I knew my best friends, Jesse and Hannah, would be there, too. The night we arrived, Jeff suggested we enjoy some milkshakes in the city.…

Tamales Through Time This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria!…
