“Saturday Climbing” by W.D. Valgardson is a short story about a father-daughter climbing duo, in which the climbing has been used as a symbol for the relationship between Barry and his daughter Moira. To begin, the gradual change from seemingly impossible to difficult of the climbing gives us insight into Barry’s growth from having no idea how to raise his daughter alone to beginning to know how. In addition, Barry’s doubt in the rope and carabiners abilities to keep him safe despite being able to hold ten times their weight validates the lack of trust his has in his daughter. Furthermore, Barry’s reluctance to give Moira responsibility given her young age is demonstrated by falling from the cliff, “He stepped up, away from the safety

This specific portion of text drew my attention because it was one of the longest times that we see Krakauer struggle with his supply of oxygen. Although he talks about this experience a couple more pages deeper, this point shows us his immediate thoughts and the start of terrifying day. This slow struggle is represented by a comparison to other climbers stories of what they saw when they hallucinated while they were deprived of oxygen. How Krakauer explains this experience lets us know what kind of conflicts actually happen when trying to achieve a goal. He shows us that not everything can always go your way but you need to persevere though to find what you are looking for.…
