In Allen Woodman’s short story Wallet, the father of the protagonist is portrayed as a mischievous character, as demonstrated by the narrator’s description of his actions. The narrator describes the degree to which the father exaggerates his actions as “an old man trying to act feeble and childlike” comparing it to “stage makeup on a community theatre actor”, noting that “he has even brought a walking stick for special effect” (Woodman 129). The narrator’s use of simile that incorporates theatre when describing the father’s attempt to act feeble suggest that the father views the act of luring in the thief as some type of theatrical performance.
