Satirical Essay On Gay Marriage

“Gay people are not human.” Satirist Jessica Parker wrote this quote, which is one of the numerous repulsive things Americans have said about gay people. On June 26, 2015 all fifty states in the United States legalized gay marriage (Diamond and Vogue). Even with this being legal now, many people still find this concept inhuman and barbaric. Many Americans believe gay people should not have full rights and should be treated differently than straight people. While this may not be everyone’s view, this is a problem communities face. As the idea of a controversy builds, satirists use invective, mockery, incongruity, sarcasm, and inflation to mock American’s reaction to the idea of gay marriage. His views are a little different than Parker’s in the fact that he still believes gay people are human and have rights of their own. Brayton just believes that the idea of gay people getting married “cheapens everything”. With the use of incongruity, Brayton expresses his view of gay marriage and uses humorous ideas like penguins getting married to express his views of the topic (Brayton). Key and Peele have a video called Gay Marriage Advice that uses mockery and inflation to exaggerate a family’s reaction when finding out a family member is gay and preparing for a wedding. The whole situation was blown out of proportion and teases the way many people handle similar situations. In the video, a family hires a gay co-worker to help prepare for the gay wedding (Key and Peele). In the beginning, the family member who works with the gay man verbalizes his opinion on keeping this relationship strictly business, so people would not assume they were friends right after saying how supportive he wants the family to be for the wedding (Key and Peele). The family members all asked ridiculous questions like if there is a specific straight section for them to sit in, and where can they find gay wedding gifts (Key and Peele). This is inflation because Key and Peele take the simple idea of two men getting married and blow it out of proportion with the ridiculous questions and concerns the family has for the wedding. Many people think of gay weddings as different and inappropriate compared to traditional weddings. This video makes the whole ordeal more dramatic and takes the criticism to a whole new level. Mockery was used to make fun of the way the family react to a gay marriage and their ideas on how it is different and questions why it cannot just be a normal wedding
