In the introduction of the article, the author begins by speaking about the product being marketed to customers and the benefits that it supposedly offers. Stating that they “Stimulate and soothe the wearer’s feet”, makes it sound to be merely a typical, everyday ad seen while simply watching television or while on the computer (“The Onion, lines 3-4). Using creative diction and scientific-sounding words that have no real significance, the author mocks the way quintessential ads delude and manipulate their buyers into purchasing their allegedly admirable products. Words such as “Pseudoscience” and “Pseudoscientists” look to…
The author’s diction expresses how advertisements are often exaggerated. The authors tone and use of word choice displays his or her making fun of advertisements. The author makes up words to imitate the advertisements that try to use large and scientific sounding words to improve their product. The use of the made up words “kilofrankels”, “pain-nuclei”, and “comfortrons” make a link to words typically used in advertisements.…
The author uses exclamatory phrases when he states how his product is one of a kind. According to The Onion, “What makes MagnaSoles different from other insoles is the way it harnesses the power of magnetisms.” Because MagnaSoles are one of a kind, the author can express a exclamatory tone towards his product when he says you have to get them. Although he doesn't use much exclamatory language, his convincing tone is what really persuades his audience. Presented by the author, “Released less than a week ago, the $19.95 insoles are already proving popular among consumer, who are hailing them as a welcome alternative…”…

The knights eventually find the castle that houses the Holy Grail, but once there, they are stopped by French soldiers and the police. The first article, “The Onion's Tips for Applying to College”, makes fun of the college application process and how college can be very selective, making them more likely to accept those with higher grades or interesting activities participated in. Such as, having “Boring last names will put your application on the bottom of the pile.” (Bolton). In reality, colleges would not be selective based on names but the article exaggerates the application process. The article contains verbal irony because the writer uses sarcasm when stating, “Most college applications do not specify whether a stool sample is mandatory, so it’s best to call each school’s admissions office and ask.”…

Dystopia Aldous Huxley uses many political and social issues such as drugs, sex, and brainwashing to create the theme of the novel. He also uses diction and details to emphasize the theme. The World State’s use of conditioning centers forces the whole of the society to find the value in spontaneous sex and drug usage. He uses satire to reveal that he does not want bokanovskfiy indefinitely because it would take away all individuality.…
Recently, I watched a new Netflix original animated comedy called Big Mouth. It came out last year and only has released one season. This show spares no gross detail as it follows tween characters in middle school as they go through puberty and deal with the many other issues that come with adolescence. Best friends Nick and Andrew navigate through their relationship after going through recent changes, or lack thereof in Nick’s case, and face challenges: masturbation, sexuality, girls, urges, and hormone monsters. It also presents Nick and Andrew’s female counterparts, Missy and Jessi, and shows their feelings and struggles as they go through similar changes.…
Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…
hank you. We have listened and you have told us --- ENOUGH. ENOUGH of feeling like your government is ignoring you. ENOUGH of Washington bailouts and handouts.…
Sexual harassment has been a continuous crime that was always looked over, but recently has been a pinpoint in the public eye. To keep a stern and continuous assessment on the way sexual harassment is handled, especially in Hollywood, Saturday Night Live conducted a skit using satire to address the issue while making it comical. To make satire effective, SNL utilized multiple literary devices to keep the issue in mind while allowing for comic relief and addressed multiple people in the industry while talking of their crime. Saturday Night Live captured the sad, yet realistic view on sexual assault in Hollywood. Many actors have been accused of touching a coworker inappropriately, flashing, molestation, and genital mutilation.…
Skylar had said repeatedly over the years that she should be completely insane because of all the crap that she had been through over the years. She had been raped, beaten, cheated on, stole from, her husband had been murdered by her stepson. She had to raise these horrible stepchildren for the last six years and even though she knew her stepson was involved in her husbands death the police could find no proof. Every morning she got out of bed and continued living her life with the fear of her stepson hurting her and her girls. Then the night that the bone chilling rain came down slow and steady while she was crying over spilled milk is when it all changed.…
Satire Satire or the use of humor, irony, or exaggeration to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices is used in many types of stories to entertain the reader in a fun way. There are many different stories that do this by not even talking about it. Authors can do this by saying jokes all throughout a story and they don’t even mention their jokes. This is one of the best ways to make a story because laughter is one of the best feelings.…
In his book titled “The Future of Life”, Edward O. Wilson effectively utilizes satire to illustrate the unproductive nature of an Environmentalist versus People-First debate. By lacking a complete arsenal of constructively, statistically, and logically correct arguments, both point of views were explained with the use of overly dramatic irony, extreme real life examples, and outlandishly childish name-calling. Wilson is able to depict a ludicrous display of an utmost unconstructive argument that ultimately leads to nothing except for the undermining of both parties. One of the highlighting uses of satire that Wilson was able to incorporate, was the manner in which both sides attempted to weaken the opposition with the use of unproductive name-calling. We witness this immature behavior in that the People-First would refer to the…
