The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

Candide is the story of the character Candide and the circumstances that fell upon him after his abrupt eviction from a seemingly idyllic castle. These circumstances reveal that the metaphysical optimism that his mentor, Pangloss has taught him is incorrect, through hardship after hardship. The story successfully challenges metaphysical optimism, the belief that “we live in the best of all possible worlds” and illustrates its dangers and ridiculousness through the use of various satirical elements such as exaggeration, irony, and ridicule. Voltaire first challenges metaphysical optimism through the use of satire when Candide persists in its belief, despite being forced to run the gauntlet. Candide states that “everything is linked by necessity and arranged for the best.…

My inquiry project conveys how the good life portrayed on social media is so easy to fake, but these unreachable goals push people to try and reach these impossible levels of perfection. My inquiry project is a combination of photos showing how easily I can change myself to influence what other people think of me. Through social media I can show the world any version of myself I want to, even a fake made up version. Clothes, makeup, good photographers, good backdrops, etc. are all things that can completely change the way people think of you after seeing your social media profile. From the moment we were born, to the last breath we take in this world, humanity itself has always strived to reach the ultimate perfection. Society itself is obsessed over the utopian-like idea of perfection, to the point of it seemingly being projected to people as the epiphany of their human purpose. I too, became one of the countless people who became infatuated with the idea of perfection; I tried to get the perfect grades, to write the perfect speech and to live the perfect life. I made the fatal mistake of not distinguishing between reaching excellence and perfection; and because of this, I found myself running in vicious circles, trying endlessly to pursue what can never be attained in the first place. Failures after failures to achieve…
